The hydrogen will fuel AC Transit's fleet of 40-foot Van Hool/UTC/ISE fuel cell buses and future fleets of light duty vehicles (cars, SUVs, and small trucks) in support of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's vision of a hydrogen highway network in California

Description
|
Hydrogen filling station providing CGH2 for three fuel cell buses. Hydrogen is derived via a small-scale, onsite natural gas steam reformer. The station will dispense up to 150 kg hydrogen per day. The station will also be able to fuel H2-powered light duty vehicles.
The station dispense H2 up to 150 kg/d. Two dispensers (35 MPa, expected refuelling time less than 15 minutes) + mobile fueler with a maximum capacity of two bus fillings/day.

ACT took over the station in fall 2010 (before Chevron);
From the first half of 2011 on, new filling technology will be installed by Linde like in Emergyville,but without car filling, only buses. The new station will be able to fuel up to 12 buses consecutively (each with 30 kg within 5 minutes) and will be fully integrated in a existing diesel fueling station.
A third of the fuel supply will be derived from the electrolysis of water using a PEM electrolyzer powered by renewable electricity generated from biogas-fed, stationary 400kW solid oxide fuel cells.
Photovoltaic system was installed to produce electricity for the electrolyser.

Capability to add stationary fuel cell to use excess hydrogen to generate electricity is planned.
This station is part of the HyRoad Project (see www.actransit.org/environment/hyroad_main.wu) and of the DoE Hydrogen program (see www.hydrogen.energy.org) and Hydrogen Fuel cell Bus project (evaluated by NREL see ZEBA at www.nrel.gov/hydrogen/ ) and funded by FTA.
