CDM Clean Development Mechanism

The relevant information about the Clean Development Mechanism, an instrument allowing to reduce emissions with projects in developing countries.

Certification / Chronological order

  1. Preparation of a project schedule (nonrecurring) in connection to a certain methodology
  2. Agreement with the government of the host country (nonrecurring)
  3. Preparation of documents needed for validation (once in ten years or thrice for seven years) by project owner
  4. Validation of project documents by the first certifier (operational entity) (once in ten years or thrice for seven years). If a new methodology is submitted with the project, the methodology will first have to be acknowledged before validation.
  5. The project is thoroughly checked for compliance with the regulations. The registration of the project follows at the CDM Board (nonrecurring)
  6. Implementation of the project and monitoring of the project according to the validation
  7. Testing of the success of the project and verification by the second operational entity (periodical, predominantly once a year)
  8. Emissions rights are registered at the UNFCCC and after subtraction of 2 % and of a fee for administrative costs are assigned to the registry account of the involved Annex-I-country.
  9. Project finish date after 10 or 21 years depending on the application

for further information see the following presentation

Note:
For acceptance of a CDM-project the chosen methodology is of big importance. If an acknowledged methodology is used with the project, the procedure for acceptance will be easier.
