ASME content ASME Codes are rules for the design, manufacturing and testing of pressurized components such as pressure vessels, steam boilers, safety valves and pipelines. These codes are valid in North America and a number of other countries.
The ASME Codes consist of following volumes:
Design is governed by the following volumes:
Section I
Power Boilers
Section III
Nuclear Components
Section IV
Heating Boilers
Section VIII, Div. 1, 2 und 3
Pressure Vessels
Section X
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Vessels
The above-mentioned codes point to the following codes:
Section II
Material
Section V
Nondestructive Examination
Section IX
Welding Qualification
Section XI
Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant Components

Scope of application
Section I
- Power steam boilers with an operating pressure of > 15 psi (1.03 bar)
- Power hot-water boilers with an operating pressure of > 160 psi (11.03 bar)
and/or a temperature of > 250 °F (121 °C)
Section IV
- Power steam boilers with an operating pressure of <=15 psi (1.03 bar)
- Power hot-water boilers with an operating pressure of <=160 psi (11,03 bar)
and/or a temperature of <=250 °F (121 °C)
Section VIII, Div. 1
- Internal/external pressure: 15 psi (1.03 bar) to 3000 psi (206.85 bar)
- Inside diameter or diagonal > 6 in (152 mm)
- not included are amongst others
- pressurized water-filled pressure vessels (p <= 300 psi (20,7 bar) or
design temperature <= 210 °F (99 °C))
- indirectly heated pressure vessels (heating capacity <= 200.000 Btu/h,
water temperature <= 210 °F, water contents <= 120 gallons)
- vessels with an inside diameter or diagonal of <= 6 in regardless of
vessel length or pressure
Section X
The vessels are assigned to different classes and, depending on the test and
manufacturing method various maximum operating pressures and temperatures apply.
These vessels are not suitable for storing toxic substances.

Methodology to ASME approval
1st step
Application for approval to use the code stamp. Submit an application for accreditation
to the "ASME-Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committee, Three Park Avenue, New York,
N.Y 10016", Phone 001 212 591 8581, Fax 001 212 591 8599. The application must state
which stamp is going to be used and which product is to be manufactured (sample).
2nd step
An inspection agreement must be concluded with an authorized inspection organization
(e.g. Arise Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, Grand Bay, 7000 South Edgerton
Road, Suite 100, Brecksville, Ohio 44141-3172). This does not apply to applicants
for H (cast-iron heating boilers), HV, UD, UV, UV3 and V stamps.
3rd step
The completed accreditation contract must be returned to ASME. A certificate
fee $ 940 for H/UM, otherwise $ 2820, a fee for the stamp $ 280 and a deposit for the conduct
of the review ($ 10.000) must be transferred.
4th step
Audit preparation:
- Preparation of a quality manual in line with the relevant ASME Code (in
English)
- Drawings and pertinent calculations
- Implementation of welder qualification tests
- Implementation of welding process tests
- Documentation of non-destructive testing
- Test-personnel qualification
- Process instructions
- Documentation of measurement equipment calibration
- Preparation of manufacturing and test-sequence plan
- Purchase ASME standards, if not yet available
- Manufacture demonstration product
5th step
Audit (Joint Review)
- Participants:
- one ASME representative
- supervisor and inspector of the selected inspection organization
- Contents:
- Quality Manual review
- Quality Manual implementation
- Tests conducted on a demonstration product
6th step
Issue of certificate and award of stamp to manufacturer by ASME.
The certificates are valid for

fter expiry of the above periods, audits (as outlined above) must be conducted.
For manufacturers with a UM stamp, the audits after the 1st and 2nd year of each
3-year period are only conducted by the inspection organization.
7th step (optional)
If vessels are to be registered with the National Board, an application for authorization
must first be applied before at the National Board.
