EN 288-3, 4 "Welding procedure test" - Approval of welding procedures

Principle of application according to DIN EN 288 - 3 / - 4

Product standard and/or terms of delivery

Product standards (e.g. AD Code o. Pr. HP 2/1) require evidence of approved welding procedures as per EN 288-3 or -4. In this context, it is possible to stipulate additional requirements and restrictions to those outlined in the standard.

Preliminary welding procedure specification (pWPS) as per
DIN EN 288 - 2

The preliminary welding procedure specification must be prepared by the manufacturer as per EN 288-2. It must define the range of all essential
parameters (welding requirements) and is a prerequisite for the approval procedure.

EN 288 - 3 / - 4
"Procedure tests"
- steel / aluminium

Test-piece manufacturing (form and dimensions cf. EN 288-3 or -4) as per specifications contained in the pWPS. Manufacturing details are recorded by the competent body.

Welding-procedure approval report (WPAR)

Non-destructive and destructive tests of test pieces in line with the requirements of EN 288-3 or -4 and any additional requirements outlined in the product standard, if any. The welding-procedure approval report (documented by the competent body) records test-piece manufacturing and evaluation results and defines the range of approval.

Welding-procedure specification (WPS)

The competent body confirms the pWPS on the basis of the welding procedure approval report. The welding procedure specification (WPS) thus serves as evidence of the specified welding procedure for the manufacturer and entitles the latter to manufacture within the defined range of approval.
