Welding coordination personnel have to ensure cross-departmental adherence to welding-related rules and regulations during production.

Their tasks and responsibilities are described in DIN EN ISO 14731. This standard  replaces DIN EN 719.

DIN EN ISO 14731 - Welding coordination - Tasks and responsibilities

According to DIN EN ISO 14731 annex  B of  ISO 3834 classifies the tasks asks and responsibilities of welding coordination in the following areas:

  • Design / Design approval
  • Contracts / Documentation
  • Monitoring / Measuring
  • Quality correction

DIN EN ISO 14731 - Welding coordination - Technical knowledge and qualification

Welding coordination personnel must have appropriate knowledge to fulfill all tasks assigned to them in a satisfactory manner.

In addition to general technical knowledge, their qualification should also cover special welding-related know-how.

In general, supplementary training is necessary.

Such training is offered for three levels of qualification:

  • Basic welding-related knowledge: Welder
  • Special welding-related knowledge: Welding technician
  • Comprehensive welding-related knowledge: Specialized welding engineer

Welders and operators

The quailification of welders and operators carry out in accordance with the relevant version of the corresponding standards for:
  • Fusion welding: Steel
  • Fusion welding: Aluminium and aluminium alloys
  • Fusion welding: Copper and copper alloys
  • Fusion welding: Nickel and nickel alloys
  • Fusion welding: Titanium and titanium alloys, zirconium and zirconium alloys
and the approval testing of welding operators for fusion welding and resistance weld setters for fully mechanized and automatic welding of metallic materials.

The welding processes are explained in DIN 1910-100:2008-02 and DIN EN 14610-2005-02 / the process numbers are listed in  DIN EN ISO 4063:2000-04.

Welders and operators:
Approval testing of welders - period of validity / extension

A welder's approval remains valid for a period of two years, provided that the relevant certificate is signed at six-month intervals by the employer and that the following requirements are satisfied:

  • The welder must be engaged with regularity on welding work within the current range of approval. An interruption for a period not exceeding six months is permissible.
  • There is no specific reason to question the welder's skill and knowledge.
If any of these requirements is not satisfied, the approval shall be declared invalid.


The validity of the approval on the certificate may be prolonged by the examiner or examining body for further two-year periods within the original range of approval, provided
  • the requirements listed above are satisfied and
  • records of tests, shall be kept available on file together with the welder's approval test certificate.
