Description:
After 3 years of operation, cracks penetrating through approx. 25 % of the wall thickness were detected on the internal surface of a feedwater tank.  

Failure cause:
Betriebsbegleitende Dehnungs- und Temperaturmessungen zeigten, dass im Rissbereich Spannungskonzentrationen vorlagen und gleichzeitig Betriebszustände auftraten, welche Belastungen ergaben, die in der Auslegung des Bauteiles nicht berücksichtigt waren.

Remedy:
Thanks to a more favorable design, stress was reduced by approx. 50 %. Modifying the mode of operation helped to reduce component stress still further.
